This skinny grapefruit Moscow mule recipe is speaking directly to all the moms of the world! The refreshing, lightened-up version of the classic original has less calories, less sugar, but the same level of amazing flavor.
When I posted an Instagram story last week about a little cocktail I was inventing, I received so many direct messages asking for the recipe that I wondered…
Are all my readers drunks?
Are other moms as overwhelmed as I am?
How can I save the wold, one drink at a time?
It’s weird though, I’ve never received such an overwhelming response from followers asking, “WHERE IS THIS RECIPE?” Kale never, ever entices quite the way that alcohol does I guess. Especially the skinny grapefruit Moscow mule kind of alcohol.
I didn’t want to leave you guys hanging! What kind of mom friend would I be if I said, “meh, I’ll try to post it sometime this summer”? Mom friends don’t do that to each other. We know how dire it is to drink every once in awhile after the tantrums, talking back, poop, negotiations, leg-clinging, and desperate attempts to pee by yourself without company. We know that a good buzz is just what the doctor ordered after the kids go to bed (we TOTALLY wait till they’re in bed….totally).
Which got me thinking of Mother’s Day. Is anyone with me that Mother’s Day should really be called “hall pass” day? I mean, YES I would love to spend the day with my children, going out to brunch first, then doing something super fun as they all behave and shower me with love. But here’s the reality with small children, brunch never happens (you think a baby and a toddler are going to wait 40+ minutes just to get seated, then another half hour until food comes?! Ummm no). Then it’s finding a ‘fun’ activity that doesn’t involve us splitting up to chase one and carry the other, only to make a mad dash home to get them both down for afternoon naps before the meltdowns occur. Sounds like a super fun mom day, right?
God bless my husband. He understands how important a Mother’s Day hall pass day is to me. I haven’t checked off many Mother’s Days as a mom yet, but I do look forward to those amazing words that so eloquently pour out of my husband’s mouth on that beautiful Sunday in May, “go do your thing”.
My thing?! I don’t even have a thing?! I don’t even know what to make a thing. But I do know I can go to the grocery store alone, grab a coffee as I roam through Target, maybe even hit the gym or take a walk without pushing a stroller. It’s glorious. Mother’s Day rocks my world.
Now before you think I’m this horrible, drunk mom that avoids her children….
Hmmmm, I’m actually not even sure I know how to respond to that. I guess I’ll just say, I adore my children, but I’m a better mom when I get some ‘me’ time. And when I’m buzzed. (KIDDING!) (…kinda) (…not really)
Every mom should get a hall pass day with opportunities to do whatever the heck she wants. And the ok to drink a skinny grapefruit Moscow mule to her heart’s content.
My version of this classic cocktail slashes the calories and sugar found in original mule recipes, using fresh grapefruit and lime juice to taste, with a little ginger beer, carbonated water, and lots of vodka.
Ok not LOTS, I’ll leave the alcohol intake to your discretion. Then I don’t look so bad. Fizzy, sweet citrus, ginger flavored goodness is just waiting to hit the lips of tired moms everywhere. I mean, just look at that thing – does it not whisper, “I got your back”?
Perfect for Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, and pretty much all summer long, this skinny grapefruit Moscow mule has got to go on your list of must makes when the weather gots hot the the kids get crazy. Super easy to make and even easier to sip.
Pair this little cocktail with some decadence (because, chocolate also speaks to moms) with this paleo chocolate brownie skillet cake, paleo almond cocoa mocha balls, or fudgy peanut butter bars with maple peanut drizzle.
What’s your favorite thing to do when you have a hall pass day?

I totally just did this podcast with Sarah from Creating Better Tomorrow about why moms really need that self care time, because it does make you a better mother. And I know that it’s important even for my mama, though we’re older, to get time with dad, time with the Lord alone in quiet, because it just refills her cup to be able to love on her family.
Favorite post! ? Can’t wait to try this!!
This drink is perfect! Just what I need to make asap! lol And a day in Target alone would be the best Mother’s Day present ever, I think. And maybe sleeping in– but really I know that’s totally pushing it. 😉
