It’s that time again! Time for that shiny silver tank in my back yard to start smiling it’s big, wide-mouthed grin, ready for me to throw some food in it and celebrate summer. The grill used to intimidate the heck out of me (always wondering if I was going to scorch my eyebrows off or something). But lately we’ve become besties, especially when it produces these perfect orange balsamic grilled brussels sprouts.
Grilling used to be my husband’s job. It’s totally a ‘Tim-the-Toolman’ gig. But there’s something about taking control of the grilling duties that make me feel all ‘Rosie the Riveter’. Never mind that I’ve birthed babies, changed tires, and carry two children down two flights of stairs every morning (my toddler still asks, and I’m incapable of saying no) – that grill is like a big medal of achievement to me. And every time the sun hits it just right, I swear it’s winking right at me.
I’ve come a long way people. Last year’s grilling attempts could have been disastrous – the first time I tried, I left the top down as I fired that gas up. AKA could have pretty much blown my face off…Since then we’ve forgiven, and learned to start our relationship all over. It’s a beautiful story really. Kind of Rhianna/Eminem turned Lionel Richie/Celine Dion.
Since then, I’ve been experimenting with all kinds of good eats on those hot metal grates, like these orange balsamic grilled brussels sprouts. I hope to bring you many, many more this summer (per me not starting any of my body parts on fire).
I adore grilling brussels sprouts, since it takes a fraction of the time than roasting them in the oven (and well, anything on a kabob is just fun). In 8-10 minutes you have perfectly charred, perfectly softened, perfectly flavorful sprouts that have a hint of balsamic and orange, giving it just enough flavor to enhance the sprouts, but not overpower them.
And of course I’m bringing ’em to you Whole30 compliant! But can I let you in on a little secret? If you aren’t throwing down a Whole30 challenge this summer, add a teaspoon of pure maple syrup to the marinade. OH EM GEEEEE – so good.
These orange balsamic grilled brussels sprouts are the PEREFCT summer side any meat you throw on the grill – chicken, steak, pork, or fish. Plus they pair perfectly with a fresh margarita. Or chilled white wine. Or a Moscow Mule. Or a nice cold beer. Or….ok, you get the picture. I like summer (and summer bevies). Sorry I’m not sorry dreaming of all the cocktails I’m going to consume – I’ve been pregnant for 2 summers in the past 3 years. It’s time for me to catch up with you all….
Simply throw all of the ingredients into a large bag with those fresh brussels sprouts, marinade all day, pierce a few skewers through the center, and show that grill who is boss lady! Sub whatever herb you like if fresh oregano isn’t your thing, and be sure to top with a few nuts or seeds for crunch (I used sunflower seeds).
Summer sides got you puzzled? Try this Whole30 pina colada coleslaw, or this amazing sweet bacon and broccoli salad (paleo).

I freakin love brussel sprouts! The orange and balsamic combo here sounds so darn good! Sweet and TANGY!
The best kind if combo. Thanks so much Carrie!
We’ve never grilled brussels sprouts before, but it sounds delicious. 🙂 I love when that big silver tank on our porch gets fired up; and I totally agree that grilling by yourself feels like a huge accomplishment.
It’s SO great. Way way way quicker than roasting in the oven!
I don’t have a grill- will this work in the oven as well?
Yes!
