Wondering what to eat before a big workout? This list of the 5 best pre-workout snacks is your answer for food inspiration before a sweat session. Easy and many portable options that include protein and healthy fats.
It’s a common question I get in my email inbox or Instagram direct messages – “what do you eat before you workout?” And often times it’s followed up with, “what’s a great pre workout shake?” Well, cat’s out of the bag – I don’t do pre workout shakes. I eat food…like real food before I workout. Food options that primarily focus around healthy fat and protein.
And using eggs from Eggland’s Best means optimal nutrition. Why? More than DOUBLE the omega 3’s, ten times more vitamin e, six times more vitamin D, double the B12 and less saturated fat that ordinary eggs. Wondering why? Eggland’s Best hens are fed a vegetarian diet, unlike generic hen feed of animal by-products and processed food. Plus they stay fresher longer – perfect for busy mommies like me that buy groceries in bulk so I’m not hitting the grocery store every three days. #causenoonegottimeforthat
If you’re going to fuel your body before a workout, why not fuel it in the best possible way? That’s why I love all the wide variety of products Eggland’s Best offers. Eggs, egg whites, hard boiled eggs…they have it all.
So without further ado here are my 5 best pre workout snacks. All paleo and Whole30 compliant, focused on fueling your body with healthy fat and protein, no processed junk, no weird chemical fluff.
5 Best Pre-Workout Snacks
Hard Boiled Eggs with Olives
Making your own hard boiled eggs with Eggland’s Best classic eggs, organic eggs, or cage-free eggs, or picking up a package of their Organic Hard-Cooked Peeled Eggs is an easy, portable, protein-packed, pre-workout snack that’s great any time of day. Paired with your favorite olive variety for healthy fat – it’s a balanced (and easy) combo.
Prosciutto Wrapped Avocado
I just love this pairing. You simply can’t go wrong with avocado and prosciutto. These prosciutto-wrapped avocado slices are fun and tasty, and once again have protein and healthy fat for a great pre-workout option.
Microwave Mason Jar Omelette
If you haven’t tried the microwave omelette, you’re missing out. It’s a portable, fluffy, and totally customizable. Oh, and it’s breakfast in less than 2 minutes. YEP. When early morning workouts are your gig, try throwing together a microwave omelette with previously cooked bacon (or veggies), topped with avocado. It’s genius.
Mix the eggs, coconut milk, and bacon into an 8-ounce mason jar. Place in the microwave and cook for roughly 1 minute, 30 seconds (more or less depending on your microwave). The egg will look as if it will pour over the mason jar as it’s cooking, but the omelette mixture will go down once cooled. Top with fresh avocado.
Smoked Salmon and Raw Nuts
When you have zero time to throw anything together, pairing smoked salmon with a handful of mixed nuts and/or seeds is easy and simple, but packs some major nutrient-dense fuel. No salmon? No problem. Use any leftover protein from dinner the night before! Pictured above: hazelnuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and cashews.
Paleo Egg Salad
Not gonna lie, I slammed this about 30 minutes ago. Errands –> paleo egg salad –> barre class. Make this simple pre-workout snack the night before, refrigerate overnight, then throw it all into a container to bring with you the next day. I love how creamy and tangy it is, and these hard boiled eggs from Eggland’s Best have the best texture.
If using raw eggs, place into a pot of boiling water and cook for roughly 8 minutes, then submerge into an ice bath. Once eggs are cooled, remove the shell.
Cut the eggs horizontally, then flip to slice the top to cut the egg into fourths. Starting from right to left, dice the egg to desired size. Mix the mayo, dijon, and salt together, then add to the diced egg. Top with green onions.
There you have it! 5 best pre-workout snacks that are all made with real food, all paleo, and all Whole30 compliant. Next time you’re stumped, this list will give you some inspiration and major nutrient goodness for your body. And be sure to have Eggland’s Best stocked in your refrigerator for a nutrient-dense option any time of day!
